Tags and cookie consent
What UK GDPR and PECR mean for your advertising tags, and how to keep tracking consent-compliant.
Under UK GDPR and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), advertising and analytics tags generally need a visitor's consent before they run. The same applies across the EU.
What this means in practice
- Use a cookie banner that lets visitors accept or reject optional cookies.
- Make sure your advertising tags only fire after consent, or run in a consent-aware mode.
- Keep your privacy and cookie policy up to date and list the platforms you use.
Consent modes
Google's Consent Mode lets Google tags adjust their behaviour based on your visitor's choice. Many consent tools also integrate with Meta, TikTok and Microsoft.
